#806 Hyden 400 Race Report
Just returned from the Hyden 400, with a mixed result.
Prologues dusty conditions soon changed after a large down pour, the run
into Hyden on day 1 was awesome fun and saw the team setting the fastest 4WD
time into town. Although 5kms before arriving at Hyden at 181km/h (Radar
Speed Check) the starting ring gear decided to let go, so a cautious run in
from that point to town was made. A push start and a slow run back was
required, until we could determine what the problem was.
Day 2 starting 3rd in class a decision was made to
continue without a starter motor, but keeping the RPM to a minimum hoping to
last the distance. Unfortunately after 1 lap at 75% race pace, the flex
plate decided it had enough - see pictures. All in all, enjoyed the event.
It was a good turn out for the four wheel drives, with M1 and M2 (car 866)
doing well with the national win in class.
Now the gearbox is out and we are assessing the damage. A
stronger adapter system will be used to mate the gen IV to the Toyota (or
Patrol?) Gearbox.
